ASK THE ANESTHESIOLOGIST

 

Anesthesia is the first medical specialty. God "caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam" for rib extraction (Genesis 2:21). Without anesthesia there are no operations. Even for minor operations the surgeons are using local anesthesia. Anesthesia changed the all natural history of medicine and it is still changing.

However, there is a widening gap between the anesthesia providers and the millions of patients.

Patients are afraid of the anesthesia more than they are afraid from the operations. Patients do not know exactly what are the options provided for their operations from the anesthesia point of view. Patients are signing the informed consent forms without being well  informed regarding anesthesia. Patients do not know exactly how post-operative analgesia can make their post-operative pain disappear.

There is also a big difference in the state of anesthesia care among hospitals and countries. For the same operations patients are getting different kinds of anesthesia with different results. Many operations that could be done by regional anesthesia are still done by general anesthesia. Almost 80% of the anesthesiologists prefer regional anesthesia for their own operations. However, only 10% of the patients are anesthetized by regional anesthesia by anesthesiologists that would prefer another kind of anesthesia for themselves. Otherwise, you cannot explain this discrepancy.

In order to help patients by responding to their questions on anesthesia issues we have emailed several hundreds anesthesiologists from many countries. We asked them to volunteer to this ASK THE ANESTHESIOLOGIST organization in order that patients from all over the world will be able to email them DIRECTLY to get a response for their questions on anesthesia.

We encourage other anesthesiologists to join this global ASK THE ANESTHESIOLOGIST list.

This network of anesthesiologists may even broaden the scope of the project for other areas like sending Anesthesia books and journals to needed countries (according to the information received from the anesthesiologists of these countries) and even sending needed anesthesia equipment from one country to another. A participation of commercial companies in these efforts may take place.

However, any such effort will be directed and facilitated by a particular anesthesiologist in each country.

I encourage especially anesthesiologists from Africa and Asia to join this list. I hope that a large number of anesthesiologists from America, Europe and Australia will volunteer to help their colleagues in Africa and Asia.
