Anesthesia in Yugoslavia

Yugoslavian anaesthesiologists are members of the Yugoslav Anaesthesia Association, including SARA (Serbian Section of Regional Anaesthesia).
Apart from general, regional anaesthesia is applied in all clinics in Yugoslavia. The leading hospital in Yugoslavia is Clinical Centre of Serbia (KCS) which includes also Institute of Anaesthesia and Resuscitation with 130 anaesthesiologists. The anaesthesiologists are employed in the following clinics: Urology Surgery Clinic - 6 operating theatres (o.t.), Vascular Surgery Clinic (4 o.t.), Abdominal Surgery Clinic (6 o.t.), Neurosurgery Clinic (6 o.t.),Thoracic Surgery Clinic (4 o.t.), Gynaecology and Obstetric Clinic (8 o.t.), Maxillofacial Surgery Clinic (3 o.t.), Plastic Surgery Clinic (4 o.t.), Ophthalmic Surgery Clinic (4 o.t.), Otorhinolaryngology Surgery Clinic (6 o.t.), Paediatric Surgery Clinic (7 o.t.), Oncology Surgery Clinic (4 o.t.), Orthopaedic Surgery Clinic (6 o.t.), Urgent Trauma Centre (6 o.t.), Helicopter and Aircraft emergency crew and Kidney transplantation emergency crew.
The number of anaesthesiologists is changing every month since a great number of Yugoslavian anaesthesiologists are quitting their jobs and going to work in European and other countries.
The working week of the Yugoslav anaesthesiologist is 40 hours plus 6 monthly duties, beginning at 8 a.m. o'clock and lasting until 8 a.m. o'clock tomorrow morning. Anaesthesiologists are free of job only that next day.
Institute of Anaesthesia and Resuscitation is employing 3 Professors, 2 Docents and 5 Assistants. At Urology Clinic of KCS one anaesthesiologist is doing an average of 80 operations (excluding ambulatory anaesthesia) per month.
Anaesthesia equipment is from the following companies - Drager, Siemens and Datascope. As for medical consumption - ICN, Hemofarm and Arrow.
We use all drugs being used for modern anaesthesia performance. Despite of great economic problems social insurance in Yugoslavia is free of charge and it is each citizen's right.
Taking into consideration enormous work and using of modern anaesthesia techniques Yugoslav anaesthesiologists are well known for their medical education and working experience.
